Once you’ve nailed the food, there are a few more things you can do to ensure your guests have a great time. As hospitality professionals, we’ve mastered what it takes to pull off an impressive event. When it comes to hosting the ultimate barbecue bash, we’ve got a few tips to share with you.
How to Host the Ultimate Barbecue
Nail the menu.
At the center of every barbecue is, of course, the food. The meat should be juicy, tender, and smokey. To balance all that meat (and please any vegetarians) serve a variety of sides, including hot and cold dishes such as coleslaw and baked beans. Do include condiments, but on the side! Some people prefer their barbecue au natural, while others want it smothered in sauce, ideally more than one.
2. Offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
We typically barbecue when the weather is hot, so staying hydrated is essential. Provide a variety of refreshing beverages, including non-alcoholic options such as fresh-squeezed lemonade, iced tea, and fruit or herb-infused water.
3. Be eco-friendly.
If you’re using disposable plates, utensils, and napkins, opt for eco-friendly alternatives. Substitute single-use plastic for paper products or, better yet, use compostable options like those made from bamboo or sugarcane. Have a clearly labeled separate bin for recyclables, like cans and bottles.
4. Set the mood with intentional lighting.
If you’re eating outdoors, a few strings lights or tiki torches go a long way in making the space feel inviting. You can create a similar ambiance if you're eating indoors by simply dimming the lights. While we love a candlelit meal, they’re a little too formal for this affair.
5. Keep guests entertained.
Good food and good company are all you need, but a game or two will make things even more fun. Keep it simple with board games and cards, or set up classic yard games like corn hole, horseshoes, or bocce ball.
6. Have a killer playlist.
Every party needs a good soundtrack. For a barbecue, keep it upbeat and include songs everyone can sing along to. If you’re not up for making your own, this Backyard BBQ playlist on Spotify is full of crowd-pleasing classics.
